Museum of Modern Art Expansion

Expanding New York's Cultural Icon

This multi-phased renovation and expansion project integrated the existing museum with two adjoining sites. The expansion project, developed by MoMA with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler, includes the complete construction of a new building at 45 West 53rd Street, the renovation of the existing museum lobby at 25 West 53rd Street, as well as an extension into the new Jean Nouvel residential tower at 53 West 53rd Street.

JB&B was responsible for all air handling and distribution systems, power and low-voltage distribution systems, and for enhancing the existing infrastructure. Most importantly, JB&B followed strict HVAC design guidelines in this project to maintain stringent temperature and humidity requirements within the gallery spaces. It was critical to provide high levels of air filtration, maintain the temperature and humidity with very little variability and to avoid direct natural light being directed at the artwork in order to protect the art as much as possible from environmental factors. The project received LEED-CI Platinum certification.
