MSKCC Intraoperative MRI (OR #18)
Designing Flexible, High-Performance Operating Rooms
This interior renovation consists of the complete refresh of an existing intraoperative MRI operating room. Existing MEP/FP services were upgraded on the surgical platform in order to support an intraoperative MRI surgical room.
The room was designed with flexibility to accommodate various types of hospital case types. The operating room can function as a traditional operating room as well as an intraoperative MRI operating room depending on the location of the magnet to provide the institution with maximum program flexibility.
Key MEP/FP design features included full MRI functionality with the magnet operating on normal power or emergency power; dual emergency source line isolation power distribution centers for plug loads within the operating room; central UPS to eliminate power interruptions for critical equipment; and real-time room temperature, humidity, and pressure monitoring that can be viewed by both the users within the room and the hospital plant operations staff.
