Meeting a Crisis with Speed and Precision

JB&B was contacted by Turner Construction Company and asked to join a team for the design-build construction of a 1,000+ bed alternate care facility at Stony Brook University under the direction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in response to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Turner led the design-build team to build the field hospital, which occupies several acres and is comprised of five (5) tents totaling 220,000 sq.ft. JB&B designed each tent with minimum ventilation, air-cooled DX air conditioning units that deliver supply air via high-volume, extended throw drum louver diffusers located at the vertical tent side wall. Return air was located low along the vertical tent side wall and hard-ducted back to the air handling unit. Spill air fans were provided with each tent to offset the ventilation air provided, which gave the functionality for each tent to operate in either positive or negative pressure based on usage.

JB&B also provided insight on oxygen usage to support acute care and Covid-19 patients. It was important to provide a design that met the requirements of Stony Brook University Hospital’s respiratory therapist and the USACE, while also understanding what was readily available for distribution (i.e., local cylinders) should the site be utilized at full capacity as originally planned.
