Modernizing the Backbone of Air Travel

This project consists of designing the standard for the new Air Traffic Control Towers across the United States that are cost-effective and meet operational requirements in various environments such as high and low temperatures, wet and dry conditions, and high winds. The towers will be between 60 and 119 feet tall, and will be standardized, yet customizable to accommodate different climate and seismic conditions. With a priority of sustainability that aligns with the Department of Transportation's goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation industry by 2050, the design employs all-electric building systems. 

Inside the towers, air traffic controllers will work in spaces that integrate natural daylighting and fresh air ventilation to enhance their comfort. In environments that permit, the towers will employ geothermal heating and cooling systems to promote the use of renewable energy sources. The FAA has identified 31 towers at smaller, municipal airports that are beyond their intended lifespan as initial candidates for the new design.
