NYC Borough-Based Jails Program, Queens Garage and Community Space
Supporting Sustainability and Public Service
The design-build project is part of the NYC Borough-Based Jails Program, the city’s reimagining of its jails as civic assets that will provide a better life for those who are detained and work in them, support smoother transitions back home, and serve as resources for the community. This project consisted of the construction of a new 9-story parking garage and community space located alongside the new detention center in Queens.
The 218,000 sq.ft. parking garage allows for approximately 600 car parking spaces, including thirty-one (31) Level 2 chargers and three (3) DC fast chargers, with provisions being made for ninety-two (92) future Level 2 chargers and ten (10) future DC fast chargers. The roof of the parking garage and community space includes environmental sustainability features such as a partial planted green roof, a 100 kW photovoltaic system, and onsite stormwater retention. The project achieved LEED Gold certification.
