A Grand New Gateway to New York City

The redevelopment of the landmarked James A. Farley Building has created a new home for Amtrak and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in New York City. By transforming the historic post office into a 255,000 sq.ft. skylighted train hall and 810,000 sq.ft. retail and commercial development, this unique expansion of Penn Station will reduce congestion and improve the passenger experience at the nation’s busiest transit hub.

Phase 1 of the project expanded the existing West End Concourse that served LIRR passengers out of Penn Station, and allowed entrance from the Farley Building off of Eighth Avenue. Phase 2 involved the construction of the Train Hall and midblock corridor as well as the associated skylights and associated atriums, the Amtrak ticketed waiting area and the ceiling art installations at the 31st and 33rd Street entry lobbies. Phase 3 involved the conversion of the balance of the building to Class A core and shell commercial office space with an additional skylight and atrium. Phase 2 achieved LEED-NC Silver certification.
