Where Engineering Enables Breakthrough Science

This project consisted of the conversion from an existing Conference Room and Storage Facility on the 1st Floor of the Rockefeller Research Laboratory building to a meticulously controlled environment to house and accommodate a new transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Challenges included sensitivity to room temperatures, heat dissipation, magnetic fields, acoustic and floor vibration, room cleanliness, airflow movement, electrical earth grounding point, electrical supply, water cooling supply, compressed air, nitrogen, LN2, SF6 gas, room lighting, IT, hoisting and anchoring, Gatan Imaging Filter (GIF), weight issues, and guidelines that had to be met in order for the TEM to function properly. The design team created a system that required minimal maintenance and accommodated the space requirements by placing critical MEP systems in a separate equipment room to ensure a high level of system reliability.
